It was another good turn out from the AFC Wimbledon fans as 1,501 packed into Stompond Lane for the friendly match against Walton and Hersham, as Terry Eames? side chased their first victory. Unfortunately they met with a well-organised opposition who were determined to begin their pre-season with a five star display.

Walton had the best start and could well have had the early lead but for a good recovery tackle from Dave Towse that prevented a clear strike on goal. Wimbledon replied a few moments later when good movement presented Dean Martin with an opportunity from 12 yards, his header creeping past the post. Andy Hunt was the busiest of the two keepers and was continually tested with crosses from the left - right back Akin Gallimore continually pressed back into his own half. It was this threat from the left that lead to Walton?s opening goal as Hunt was unable to collect a looping cross that was headed in at the far post with 20 minutes gone. The keeper then produced two great saves as the Dons? defence came under sustained pressure as Danny Roberts and Mehmet Mehmet were unable to hold the ball in midfield or play in the ever threatening Dean Martin. Five minutes before half time Walton increased their lead as the ball was fed again from the left, it was cleared by the defence leaving a Walton midfielder to dive the ball through a crowd of players into the Wimbledon net.

Eames made two changes in midfield at half time, however they were unable to reduce the deficit as Walton made it three. Their right back was able to advance and slot home after being played through from midfield. Despite the three-goal disadvantage it was the Wimbledon fans that were the loudest and their encouragement for the team was appreciated by the players. Unfortunately for Eames, his side was again exploited form the flanks and Walton went on to score their fourth goal, this time from the right, as the ball was played across the goal and knocked home from six yards out. The rout was completed on 89 minutes as a long ball from the Walton half, enigmatic of the Wimbledon in the late 80?s, was neatly controlled by the Walton centre forward then laid off for his striking partner to fire home from 15 yards.

Despite the result the match was well received by the fans as they invaded the pitch on full time, displaying their continual delight at the clubs formation. Walton and Hersham are one of the best teams in the Ryman League South Division and Terry Eames can be proud of his teams spirited performances. Players such as Hunt, Towse and Mehmet continue to display evidence of how this newly established club is growing in experience and confidence.
