Match report
AFC Wimbledon Ladies 1 – 0 Denham United Ladies
The Wombles were keen to gain revenge for the 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture in October 2011.
Both teams started well with end-to-end play.
Just before half time Jodie Fernandes broke down the right wing slid the ball trough to Kate Walker who crossed the ball into the box where Chanel Richards slotted the ball under Denham Keeper Liz Rose. Goal time 42 minutes.
Half Time 1-0
The match then became similar to last week’s win v Eastbourne with Denham pushing for an equaliser and Wombles defence steadfastly refusing to buckle.
Emily Pratley-Jones replaced Chanel Richards after 66 minutes; then dramatically Wimbledon Keeper Leanne Knopp dropped to the ground with an injury.
After a delay for treatment Louise Cooper replaced Knopp in goal and Charlie Powell replaced Knopp taking Cooper’s place in midfield – 72 minutes.
The match continued to ebb and flow with both defences remaining steadfast.
In a final change Mel Baroni replaced the tiring Jodie Fernandes after 82 minutes.
Kerry Knott was booked for a slightly mistimed tackle, but the booking was more for the fact that Knott kicked the ball away when play was stopped.
After almost 10 minutes of stoppage time referee David Goater finally called an end to proceedings.
Although Wimbledon remain in 9th place in the League standings they have closed the gap with teams above, and crucially they have games-in-hand.
