Substitute Christian Jolley headed a dramatic equaliser two minutes into injury-time to snatch an unlikely point for the Dons.
On as an 85th minute substitute, Jolley capped a remarkable fightback from 3-1 down when he headed home a Jack Midson cross.
A wonder goal from Sammy Moore had got the Dons back into it 10 minutes from the end.
But such a scenario never looked likely for so long as Terry Brown's men were out-played at times and only a second-half Seb Brown penalty save from Ashley Westwood stopped them falling 4-1 down.
The hosts started the brightest and Wimbledon were fortunate not to be behind five minutes in when Byron Moore delivered a teasing cross that just eluded everyone. However, the Dons snatched the lead with their very first attack when Billy Knott finished off a fine team move in style.
Jack Midson found Jason Euell in space and he picked out on-loan Sunderland man Knott, who vindicated getting the nod from Terry Brown with an excellent low finish from 20 yards.
But after getting the desired response from his extra shooting practice, boss Terry Brown then watched his side concede two goals in less than three minutes as the Dons reverted back to their bad old ways in defence.
The equaliser in the ninth minute had more than a touch of fortune about it as Dons goalkeeper Seb Brown was deceived by the flight of Byron Moore’s 25-yard drive to allow Crewe to draw level.
Worse was to come from the visitors as they allowed a routine long ball from Pearson to find Nick Powell and he scored for the second time this season against Wimbledon via the inside of a post.
Though Wimbledon steadied the ship and started to get their passing game going, they again showed a soft centre when Luke Murphy’s cross found Pearson and he held off Mat Mitchel-King, before finding the top corner with a superb acrobatic finish.
The visitors were all over the place at the back and it should have been 4-1 in the 37th minute when Byron Moore missed an open goal from six yards after reaching a Danny Shelley cross first.
Pearson then shot straight at Seb Brown after going clean through and at this stage it just appeared to be a case of how many for the rampant hosts.
Wimbledon finally fashioned a half chance though on the stroke of half-time when George Moncur and Euell combined to create a shooting chance for Midson, but his shot was charged down by Dave Artell.
The Dons produced their best move of the match so far in the 57th minute when Rashid Yussuff worked a one-two with Knott, but the former’s shot was saved by the feet of Crewe goalkeeper Steve Phillips.
It should have been all over for Wimbledon just before the hour when their skipper Jamie Stuart brought down Nick Powell in the box, but Seb Brown got down well to save the subsequent penalty from Ashley Westwood.
The Dons failed to grasp that lifeline though with little cutting edge from the visitors.
Terry Brown sent on record signing Byron Harrison for George Moncur with 17 minutes left in an effort to change all that and it paid dividends 10 minutes from time.
With the Dons now throwing more bodies forward, Midson found Sammy Moore in space and he cut inside and unleashed an absolute screamer to find the top corner with a goal that must go down as one of Wimbledon’s best of the season.
The Dons had 10 minutes to conjure up an equaliser and Christian Jolley was sent on for Euell and a Harrison header wide threatened to snatch a late equaliser.
But there was a sting in the tail for the hosts in injury-time when Jolley headed home with a looping header to make it three successive draws for the Dons.
