Queens Park Rangers Girls U18
Match report
On a bright and sunny Mother’s day morning in Merstham, AFC Wimbledon U18 Girls took on QPR in the League Cup final.
As soon as the game was underway most of our fears quickly disappeared as Wimbledon took immediate control of the game. The determination of the girls was plain to see as they pressed forward toward the QPR goal and won a number of corners and tested a very confident QPR goalie. As the game progressed the opposition showed what a skillfull side they are with some very good counter attacking but the Wimbledon defence stood firm. 20 minutes in to the game an accurate up field pass from captain Annie Rawlings was headed on by Shannon Lindo to the feet of Kelly Pizzoferro. She showed a skilful turn of pace with a powerful shot that put Wimbledon 1-0 ahead.
Again straight from the kick off Wimbledon kept the pressure up and 10 minutes later they scored again. A deep cross in from the right by Bernice Tully into a crowded penalty area saw the ball bounce finally off a QPR defender into the net for a deserved 2-0 Wimbledon lead.
QPR to their credit rallied and fought back in the dying minutes of the half to force a corner which resulted in a deserved goal for the opposition. HALF TIME 2-1
The second half underway QPR roused by their late first half goal came out all guns blazing and put our girls under pressure. Once again the defence stood firm and credit to Georgina Koffler for some excellent saves in the Wimbledon goal. As the game progressed our midfield took back control and pressed forward until Kelly once again dribbling toward goal was fouled just inside the 18 yard area for a penalty. With no hesitation Shannon Lindo placed the ball on the spot and blasted it into the net, perfect penalty. 3-1 Wimbledon.
With the game seemingly won the girls let their concentration lapse a little and a scrambled second goal for QPR late on lead to a nervy last few minutes before the final whistle signalled a hard fought but thoroughly deserved win.
What a fabulous achievement for manager Nick Flinders, coach Terry Slate and all the girls to have built on their success of last year, of the league and cup double as the under 16’s and now success again as “Cup Winners” in their first season at the under 18 level where in many games they are playing against teams already one year ahead.
