 Wednesday 25 August 2004 Radio Jackie AFC Wimbledon tournament results Ben Canham reports on the first Radio Jackie AFC Wimbledon Six-a-Side tournament last weekend: The weekend of 21 and 22 August saw AFC Wimbledon Youth host our first ever six-a-side tournament. It was a massive event, attracting over 100 teams from as far away as Sussex and Reading. There were six pitches, with approximately 5 teams in each group. All the teams played each other once, with the top sides entering into the semi-finals. The football was of a high quality. Once the goalkeepers had mastered only being allowed to roll the ball out, the passes flowed and games were mostly tight and fast moving. The results were as follows (ages based on last season?s age groups): U7 winners: Oxshott Royals runner up: Staines Albion U8 w: AFC WIMBLEDON ru: AFC Wallington U9 w: Molesey Juniors ru: AFC WIMBLEDON U10 w: Gas Utd ru: AFC WIMBLEDON U11 w: Kingstonian Boys ru: AFC WIMBLEDON U12 w: AFC WIMBLEDON ru: Oxshott Royals U13 w: Tooting and Mitcham ru: AFC WIMBLEDON U14 w: Hayes FC ru: Farncombe Youth U15 w: Carshalton Ath ru: Colliers Wood U16 w: AFC WIMBLEDON ru: Tiffin Boys. As you can see AFC Wimbledon did excellently in the tournament, picking up three winners trophies at Under-8s, Under-12s and Under-16s and four runners-up at Under-U9s, Under-10s, Under-11s, and Under-13s. The Under-8s showed some particularly brilliant football. They did not concede a single goal in the tournament and held their nerve to hit some fantastic penalties in the final after the match finished 0-0. The Under-12s proved to be too strong for most sides and showed great team spirit to fight for everything and just overcome Oxshott in their final. The Under-16s were made up of boys that will feature in our U18s this season and they too sailed through to the final winning every match. Tiffin Boys battled bravely, but the Dons ran out 1-0 winners in the end. The AFC Wimbledon Youth Academy would like to thank all the teams who took part in a very friendly tournament, parents who helped run drinks and sweets stalls, the Football In The Community Scheme for the coaches who helped referee, the other referees who worked long hours, and Radio Jackie who supported the event. Also, a big mention to all the AFC Wimbledon Academy staff who helped over the weekend, even when their teams were not playing, and especially Paul Bentley who co-ordinated the tournament. The tournament was a huge success for AFC Wimbledon and a fantastic event that I'm sure will be repeated next year. |
