The new-look AFC Wimbledon Ladies team received a harsh lesson as they slumped to an 8-0 defeat to an impressive and experienced Lewes at Kingsmeadow Athletics Stadium.
The Dons were without any of last year's team and after some fairly even opening minutes Lewes went ahead in the 14th minute and it was then largely one way traffic. Charlotte Nash saved well from Harding but the Dons defence were slow to react and Chapman turned the loose ball home. A curled shot then hit the Dons bar before Trafford made it 2-0 in the 16th minute, running on to a through ball to sidefoot past Nash. A couple of long range Deena Rahman efforts tested the Lewes keeper, but after a fine Nash double save Lewes went further ahead in the 29th minute, Trafford setting up Sarson to score. In the 44th minute it was 4-0 when Smith cleverly lobbed Nash for Sarson to bundle the ball over the line.
After the interval Catherine Alderton did well to clear a Newton shot behind before Spice made it 5-0 in the 69th minute with a clever turn and shot. Spice then hit the post before Trafford ran through to score number 6 in the 76th minute. Injuries meant the Dons had to play the closing stages with only 10 players, and Lewes took advantage to score two late goals, Tagg flicking home Whitten's 85th minute free kick and two minutes later Whitten scoring a penalty after Nash had brought down Spice.
