Match report
Two goals early in the second half earned 10-woman Northampton Town a comfortable victory at wet and windy Kingsmeadow Athletics Stadium.
With the wind behind them the Dons began well with Laura Topliss having a shot blocked in the opening 15 seconds, but were lucky when a wind-affected Gallacchi shot hit the post. Lisa Couchman made a good saving tackle on Gale before the visitors were reduced to 10 women in the 14th minute when Cave tripped the onrushing Topliss for a professional foul. The Dons twice came close to scoring, Beth Sims bursting through to chip the goalkeeper only for the ball to roll agonisingly wide, then Sims charging down an attempted clearance only for the ball again to go the wrong side of the post. Gale then missed an easy chance as half-time arrived with no score.
In the second half Northampton, with the wind at their backs, dominated proceedings despite being a player short. They opened the scoring in the 50th minute when Gale scored after the Dons had missed chances to clear, then, after Christie had shot over from close range, extended their advantage in the 54th minute when Bateman's wind-assisted 40-yard effort sailed over Charlotte Nash. Nash then kept the score down by saving from Gale who was clean through, turning a Christie shot round the post, and denying Gallacchi with a good tackle. A Porter free kick clipped the Dons bar, then Nash saved again from Gale and Christie before Emma Roberts kicked a header off the line.
