Welling did the double over Wimbledon last season and the Dons sent a strong squad to Mottingham looking to even the score. Daryl Gale took up the management reigns for the day with the management duo of Warren Harvey and Alan Gale both unavailable. It was Welling who made the brighter start to the game carving out some early chances but the Dons defence held firm. Welling took the lead just before the break with Richard Hudson scoring directly from a free kick 5 yards outside the Dons penalty area. The match only really came alive in the second half with plenty of chances falling to both sides as the game opened up. Welling’s best chance was cleared off the line and the Dons made them pay soon after when a good passing move culminated with Daryl Gale’s pass which put Dan Stevens clean through on goal and the winger made no mistake placing the ball past the goalkeepers despairing dive and low into the corner of the goal. It was the away side that had the best chance to win the game late on when Peter Armfield was sent clear of the Welling defence but with only the goalkeeper to beat he shot just wide. The bright start to the season with 2 wins and a draw from their opening 4 games sees AFC Wimbledon up in 8th place in the IFA league with the short trip to face Kingstonian next up for the Dons.
