Thursday 15 October 2009 Surrey Youth Floodlit mid-week Cup
AFC Wimbledon were dispatched from the Midweek U18 Surrey cup after giving away a two goal half time lead, finally losing 3 - 2 in the last minute against Corinthian Casuals.
Without eight regulars this should still have been a routine win but very poor defending in the second half saw a spirited Casuals side go through.
AFC dominated early proceedings with Sami Bakhit and Jordan Hutchinson impressing on the flanks whilst the hard working Joe Jackson was always a threat up front. Jamie Warren produced a pass that gave AFC the first decent chance, Joe Jackson latching onto the pass and firing across the face of goal but no one was able to get a touch. However on 28 minutes AFC went ahead when a Daniel Coveley corner to the far post was headed back across goal by Callum Dunne, waiting was Rhys Turner who headed past the Casuals keeper for his fourth goal this season. More was to follow as a few minutes later a Jamie Warren free kick was headed on by Jackson to Juevan Spencer who then hit a post when well positioned to score. AFC increased their lead after 39 minutes when another set piece was well worked, Harry Bearman's wide free kick was sent to the far post where again Callum Dunne headed back across goal for Juevan Spencer to fire the ball into the roof of the net. 2 - 0 and cruising into half time.
Half Time 2 - 0
Little did we know what was going to happen in the second half as again AFC started in the acendency. An injury to Juevan Spencer saw him replaced by James Cottee and then a few minutes later Rhys Turner had to come off as he tweaked a groin, Jack Hills replacing him. Five minutes later Casuals scored their first goal when poor marking from a corner saw a Casuals forward score with a near post header. The alarm bells were ringing but it was AFC who should have increased their lead when the impressive Bakhit was set free on the right, with Joe Jackson and Jordan Hutchinson waiting for a square pass tap in Bakhit decided to shoot and the keeper pulled off a fine save. Casuals then grabbed the equaliser as a cross from the left saw the smallest player on the pitch score with a header whilst the AFC defenders looked on. Ryan Thomas then replaced Sami Bakhit for the last 12 minutes. Casuals got their reward in the last minute when another cross from the left was not shut down and again a Casuals forward got in a looping header under no pressure from a AFC defender and saw it loop over Sujit Dadar into the net. AFC will be kicking themselves for letting a two goal lead slip but good luck to Casuals in the next round as they never gave up and had more desire than the AFC players.
