Match report
A visit to table toppers Fleet ended in defeat for the dons with a scoreline that did not reflect the quality, effort and chances created by our girls..With a goal conceded only in the 3rd minute, the dons immediately created chances at the other end without fortune.The following 20 minutes was a tight affair, both sides playing some good passing football only to be thwarted by either strong defending and solid goalkeeping. This was typified by AFC right back Lee Walters, once again a rock in defence and fearless in her tackling. What happened next ultimately had an impact on the rest of the game. Dropping her head to clear yet another ball, Lee received a very high boot to the face and went down with a nasty gash to the nose and was immediately taken off to receive treatment. Lee was then taken to hospital for a check up. Thankfully, no other injury was apparent and she will be back for next weekends game. Reshuffling the defence meant even more pressure was on the Dons two new debut girls Lou Walkiden and Ella Robinson who were full of running,enthusiasm which was accompanied by some excellent tackling.Although short of match practice they equited themselves very well along with Sophie Schershel and Maisie Bolt. Fleet however kept plugging away and by half time we went in 3-0 down, but not out.
The second half started very well for the Dons, with some excellent play up both wings by Rebecca Simper and Nicole Matthews, which sadly once again ended in goal line clearences or last ditch defending. The Dons captain, Danielle Page, constantly urging her team mates on was instrumental in creating further chances with some quality through balls that just failed to find a Dons boot. Charlotte Crisp produced a surging run up the wing with forced another clearence from the busy Fleet defenders. Meanwhile Fleet stayed composed and created many chances themselves, managing to convert some of them to keep the scoreline ticking over. More injuries and reshuffling gave Serena Frazer a chance to come on with 15 minutes to go. She immediately made an impact with some nice controlled football. To their credit the girls never gave up and with ten minutes left we all had a chance to see Rebecca Simper produce some of the best individual skill seen so far with this team. After collecting the ball fifteen yards out from Fleet's goal Rebecca proceded to weave her way past 3 players with some very close ball control, leaving her with only the goalie to beat. However, like with all the other chances the girls had, it was not be and for all their endeavour Fleet managed to keep a clean sheet whilst putting 7 past our keeper Stephanie Cross, who did not deserve that particular accolade.
Once again this young new team have come up against seasoned players. There is improvement in each game these girls play and it is a good sign for the rest of the season.
