Match report

A missed penalty allowed AFC Wimbledon to claim a much-needed point against Bristol City at Kingsmeadow.

The visitors had made seven changes from the team that overran the Dons 7-0 at Almondsbury, and it became quickly apparent that the changes had not improved their side. In an instantly forgettable first half the only chance fell to the Dons when a good Beth Sims run led to her having a shot blocked, only for the ball to find Kerry Knott for a shot kicked away by Wells.

After the interval Bristol City upped the tempo and their use of the long ball, along with the introduction of substitute Hemmings, began to force the Dons back. Lou Cooper came out well to deny Hemmings but it was the Dons who went ahead against the run of play in the 66th minute when a deep Emma Whymark corner found Laura Smith at the far post to cushion a volley into the roof of the net. Jenny Castledine did well to block a shot before Bristol City equalised in the 73rd minute, a corner being headed on at the near post for Hemmings to drill a low shot into the bottom corner. A Miles free kick was headed tamely by Greenham straight to Cooper, but just when it seemed the Dons had held out Bristol City were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute for handball. Although Miles sent Cooper the wrong way from the spot the ball went comfortably wide of the post, allowing the Dons to claim a hard-fought draw.

AFCW: Cooper, Castledine, Cottier (Stewart 87), Duggan, Gooch, Whymark, Hunt, Smith L, McGrady, Sims, Knott.
