AFC Wimbledon's Surrey Cup campaign ended with a 3-1 defeat at National Division Fulham on the outside pitch at Banstead Athletic.
Late injury problems, including one sustained in the warm up, meant the Dons only had 10 players and no substitutes, but they held their own in the first half. Lou Cooper made a snap save from a far post header and a Clare Rogers cross was hacked clear before a Fulham corner was headed just over and a shot was clawed round the post by Cooper. The Dons created the best first half chance in the 43rd minute with an Alex Cottier free kick headed against the inside of the post by Laura Smith and spinning across the face of goal.
After the interval the Dons understandably tired near the end but they had a great chance to go ahead in the 52nd minute when Beth Sims turned inside a defender but her low shot was blocked by the keeper. Within a minute Fulham went ahead with a crisp low shot giving Cooper no chance. A Dons corner was half-cleared to Smith, whose low shot took a deflection and was well saved. Fulham then clipped the outside of the post before securing victory in the 83rd minute, Cooper and Clare Gooch colliding and the ball running fortuitously to Williams who turned it in to the empty net. Two minutes later the Dons pulled a goal back, Emma Whymark's corner being turned in by Smith from close range, but Fulham scored again the 87th minute, good work by Williams setting up a simple goal. Cooper then saved a Williams free kick under pressure as the home side had the better of the closing exchanges.
