AFC Wimbledon fell at the final hurdle as they lost 1 - 0 to Woking last night in the final of the surrey cup.
Woking came and set their stall out and never changed their system all night. They played one up front and five in midfield and played the long ball the majority of time. This made for a poor spectacle for the crowd as the Dons tried to play the ball on the ground, but credit to Woking who swamped the midfield and never let Wimbledon settle. It could have been so different as Wimbledon dominated the early stages with Woking hardly getting into the attacking half. Pete Rapson had a good chance when put through after 11 minutes but the keeper made a fine save; the rebound fell to Ollie Killick who also found the keeper difficult to pass as he made a double save.
Woking's first and only shot on target in the game led to their winner. A soft free kick was given away 25 yards out to the right of the penalty area, Charlie Turnball fired in a shot which suprised Jack Turner in goal, he managed to get a hand to it but failed to keep it out. Wimbledon pressed hard for an equaliser but failed to test the Woking keeper before half time.

The second half followed the same pattern as the Dons pressed for a goal and Woking relied on the long ball breakaway. Chances from corners and long throws fell to Charlie Clark-Gleave and Callum Wellburn but still the young Dons could not break through. Jordan Hutchinson replaced Tom Tollady and he looked a threat down the right for the last 25 minutes. Wimbledon then went to three at the back as Jack Stafford was replaced by Matt Harmsworth for the last 15 minutes. Still the Dons pressed hard for the equaliser and it so nearly came as a scramble in the box led to a chance for top scorer Pete Rapson but his goalbound effort was kicked off the line in the last few minutes condeming the team to defeat in this final. The young Dons were heartbroken at the end but they had given everything and tried to play football the right way. It was not to be, but there is still a long way to go this season as the team now travels to Brentwood Town on Tuesday night for a Ryman Youth League Cup Quarter Final.
