A five week gap between league games, with only an easy Surrey Cup victory in between, was no way to prepare for a tough match at Ipswich Town?s impressive men?s training ground.
AFC reserves however started brightly playing some neat football especially down the right where Nicola Manolis, Lyn Brown and Lekesha James combined well. But it was Ipswich who created the first opening, giving an example of what was to come, with a through ball that keeper Charlotte Nash did well to race out and clear.
On ten minutes AFC nearly opened their account when Brown went down the right but her cross just eluded the onrushing Michelle Storrier. Four minutes later and AFC did take the lead, this time the roles were reversed as Storrier?s cross shot from the left could only be parried by the keeper and Brown gratefully slotted home. James was next to go close when she worked her way into the box but her shot was smothered by the keeper. The game changed in a dramatic eight-minute period when Ipswich scored three almost identical goals by balls over the top coupled with clinical finishing.
AFC created chances at the start of the second half, Roxanne Camp?s through ball found Brown whose shot was well saved. Danielle Davies, up for a corner, saw her shot nestle on the top netting and Francesca Chappell?s lay off saw Storrier shoot just over. However when AFC conceded an unfortunate own goal on 63 minutes their heads dropped and two more goals gave Ipswich a flattering 6-1 victory.
