Rushden & Diamonds Ladies
Match report
Rushden and Diamonds Ladies eased into the South Eastern Combination League Cup semi-final with a comfortable 2-1 victory at Kingsmeadow Athletics Stadium.
The visitors went ahead in the 9th minute when the Dons failed to clear a corner and, after Charlotte Nash had saved from Palmer, Whelan drilled the loose ball into the roof of the net. Wright hit thhe post with a fierce shot, Lekesha James drilled a free kick wide and Nash denied Gallagher before Rushden made it 2-0 in the 35th minute. A corner was helped on by McLeod for Palmer to head past Nash. The Dons pulled a goal back in first half injury time when Triona Doyle found Claire Malone from a short corner, and when her cross struck a Rushden elbow Amy Price drilled home the resultant penalty.
Rushden totally controlled the second half but were unable to make the game safe. Fay Ludlow kicked a header off the line, Nash saved well from Moran and Palmer before Rushden twice struck the woodwork in injury time. Gallagher's free kick clipped the Dons bar, then a perfect Gallagher cross found Wright, who somehow contrived to head against the underside of the bar from point blank range.
