Match report
AFC WIMBLEDON LADIES 1 SCRANTON UNIVERSITY 3
Dons ladies kicked off in bright sunshine at the London School of Economics Sports Ground in New Malden.
Although the recent heat-wave had relented a little, the ladies found it hard to get into stride against their young, fit opponents. Rolling substitutes and regular drink breaks were the order of the day, and two of the early subs created the first real chance, Amy Price moving swiftly onto Sasha Denny's pass through the middle and outpacing the defence before forcing a good save from the keeper. The play in the rest of the half was mostly limited to midfield.
The second half was a little more open, with good attacking football from both sides. Two minutes in and Tracy Perry was called into action, tipping a Scranton shot onto the bar and on fifty minutes Maria Bertelli was unlucky with a twenty yard half-volley that was inches wide. Scranton eventually took the lead on the hour, Tracy unable to regain her ground to get a clever lob, but just four minutes later Amy Price got to a loose ball first and crashed home over the keeper from twenty yards. Both sides had chances to win, the best falling to the University side in the last minute when a forward broke clean through the defence, but she hurried her shot wide.
A good work-out for the ladies, against energetic young opponents, and an early contender for goal of the season from Amy.
