AFC Reserves progressed to the second round of the Surrey Cup with a comfortable victory over Merton at Dorking on Sunday but will need to improve their all round performance and particularly their finishing if they are to go all the way in the competition.
AFC dominated the opening exchanges but had to wait until the 38th minute before taking the lead, top scorer Michelle Storrier knocking in Kelly Nethercoat?s cross from the right. This was soon doubled when it was Nethercoat?s turn to tap in from Roxanne Camp?s cross, this time from the left. With the defence of Nicola Manolis, Danielle Davies, Rachel Woodland and Sarah Price in total control keeper Charlotte Nash was a virtual spectator for the entire game.
An avalanche of goals were expected in the second period but chance after chance went begging before Joanna Goodwin set up Storrier for her second on 63 minutes and Goodwin completed the scoring on 75 when she lofted the ball over the keeper from a Lekesha James centre. Camp looked certain to increase the lead near the end but play was inexplicably called back just as she was about to plant the ball in the net.
A comprehensive victory but AFC will not be able to be so wasteful in front of goal in future rounds. Pick of the team were Camp in midfield and Pearce at left back.
