The Dons would be looking to extract a little revenge after being thrashed in the away fixture earlier in the season. With both sides making a rather cagey start the first half produced few chances perhaps the best two falling to the home side. Firstly Gary Saxby came close with a volley in a chance reminiscent to David Platt’s goal against Belgium at Italia 90 but this time the goalkeeper managed to divert the chance over the bar. Another shot destined for the top corner a few minutes later produced a fine save from the Welling goalkeeper and so the scores remained level at half time.
Welling took the lead with a header direct from a corner early in the second half after some poor marking and when they added a second 15 minutes later the game looked to be over. However, almost straight from the kick off the Dons managed to work the ball up field and Saxby managed to prod the ball home. Wimbledon now went on the search for the equaliser and in committing players forward where always prone to the counter attack and Welling added a third goal towards the end.
Overall the Dons could perhaps rightly feel that they were unlucky not to get something out of the game.
