AFC Wimbledon faced a new opponent in Kew Association FC in the third round of the Surrey County Cup. Kew play in the first division of the Surrey Youth League (one division below AFC Wimbledon) and have had far from the best start to the season with two wins and four losses in their opening six league games. AFC Wimbledon on the other hand remained unbeaten in all competitions and looked to this game with confidence. The rain curse struck again overnight to leave conditions wet and muddy but unlike the previous week the away pitch was still playable. The rain had stopped by the start of the game but the temperature was less than comfortable. The game started at a low tempo due to the muddy playing surface but it wasn’t long before the Dons asserted their authority and started to pin Kew back in their own half. The two teams sized each other up for the first 10 minutes without a shot on goal at either end. But in the 11th minute AFC Wimbledon went ahead. Dean passed out wide to George who delivered the perfect cross to allow Dean to slide the ball into the back of the net, 0-1.
Kew had their first chance of the game after 16 minutes of play with a free kick midway into the AFC Wimbledon half. The free kick was knocked on by the Kew striker but was easily gathered by the Don’s number 1. Dean struck again in the 18th minute when a pass from Duvaine in midfield sent Dean clean through on goal. With only the keeper to beat Dean kept his composure to slot the ball home for 0-2. The Dons continued to pin Kew back playing some nice passing football. With 23 minutes played it was Danny’s turn to add his name to the score sheet with a goal that mirrored Dean’s second, slotting the ball into the net from the opposite side of the area for 0-3. 4 minutes later Darryl missed his chance to add to his teams tally. Faced with an open goal an unfortunate mishit shot sent the ball high over the bar. The Dons only had to wait another minute before their lead was extended. A cross in from Danny on the edge of the box found Cameron who released a power shot that could only result in another goal for 0-4.
Kew won another free kick 9 minutes from half time on the edge of the AFC Wimbledon penalty area. The free kick was hit straight at the keeper who caught and held well. Shots from Danny and Dean followed at the other end but neither finding the target. With 1 minute of the half left to play the Don’s mounted one final attack that again allowed Dean to run clear with only the keeper to beat. The keeper was able to block his shot but nothing was going to stop the rebound and Dean scored his hat trick for a half time score of 0-5.
Three changes at half time saw Dean, Jo and Keenan make way for Sachi, Adam and Ross. Danny had a shot saved in the first minute with another from Ross in the 7th. Cameron added another goal to the score sheet for his second of the game with a blistering shot from the edge of the penalty area to put the score at 0-6. George and Ross both came close to widening the gap even further just before the midway point of the second half. George struck the ball with vigour with the Kew keeper barely able to hang onto the ball to prevent it from crossing the line. Ross’s shot was hit with equal power but hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced out to be cleared by the Kew defence.
With 57 minutes of the game played, Danny and George came off to be replaced by Dean and Keenan. Dean had an excellent first half and soon started to cause more problems for Kew with 3 shots in ten minutes. But it was Darryl who extended the lead on 72 minutes with a well placed shot from the left hand side of the penalty area to put the Dons well ahead at 0-7. Keenan was next in line to score but this time from the right hand edge of the penalty area. The well struck shot hit the underside of the bar before bouncing into the net for 0-8. 2 minutes from time Dean added his 4th and AFC Wimbledon’s 9th of the game. A cross in from Ross found Dean for an easy header to give the Don’s a convincing win at 0-9.
All in all a very good day for AFC Wimbledon with a good display of hard work, team work and passing to put them through to the 4th round of the Surrey County Cup.
