AFC Wimbledon produced another top drawer display to complete a league double over their local rivals Tooting & Mitcham last night.
Playing on the back pitch at Banstead Athletic is never easy but a totally professional performance from the young Dons made it look simple.
Left back Dan Coveley came in for the unavailable Jake Hill whilst Callum Wellburn moved to centre half to partner Charlie Clark-Gleave. Good passing football was difficult on a bumpy pitch and it took time for both sides to adjust to the playing suface. Early signs were of a close encounter as both teams sparred for possession, gradually AFC Wimbledon got their passing game together and after 35 minutes went ahead when they produced the best piece of football in the first half. Jordan Hutchinson picked up the ball on the right flank and cut inside, an interchange of passes between Hutchinson, Killick and finally a cross from Harry Knock gave Rapson the chance from 10 yards out, his shot across the keeper hit the inside of the post and crossed the line to put AFC into a 1 - 0 lead. The front two of Killick and Rapson were a handfull for the Tooting defence and it was 5 minutes later that Killick increased that lead. James Stenning drove in from the left side and hit a fine strike from 20 yards which the keeper parried out to the waiting killick to fire home from 6 yards.
Half Time 2 - 0
Tooting looked to press more in the second half but the AFC defence was in fine form keeping the chances down to a minimum. Tom Gibson in goal hardly had a shot to save apart from a couple of through balls that needed clearing up. Jordan Hutchinson (calf) was replaced early in the second half with Tom Tollady, Billy Manning moved wide and Tollady came in central midfield with the impressive Harry Knock. AFC killed the game off when a short Harry Knock corner found James Stenning whose low cross was excellently finished by Rapson for his 11th goal in seven outings. Harmsworth replaced the tiring Rapson with 18 minutes of the game left. Dan Coveley was also replaced by Josh Ayres late on as AFC saw out the last 15 minutes creating a couple of half chances but not troubling the score. This was another fine team performance against a decent Tooting side that could upset a few teams over the second part of the season.
