Thursday 20 November 2008 Surrey Youth Floodlit mid-week Cup
AFC Wimbledon cruised through to the quarter final of the Surrey Cup scoring six goals in the process and keeping a clean sheet.
With defenders Charlie Clark-Gleave, Callum Dunne and Jamie Evans injured and the consistent Callum Wellburn also missing through illness there was a massive reshuffle at the back. Billy Manning came in at right back, 16 year old Dan Coveley at left back with Jake Hill and Jack Stafford the centre halves. All played very well keeping the Colliers Wood forwards under wraps all night.
AFC got off to a flying start and should have scored in the first minute when a James Stenning cross found a free Jordan Hutchinson in the box but his first touch let him down and the chance was lost. AFC did take the lead after 5 minutes when a Jake Hill ball found Pete Rapson on the edge of the area, he saw the keeper off his line and superbly lobbed him with a left foot strike. AFC went two up after 11 minutes when a good ball by Jordan Hutchinson found Ollie Killick who finished well past the onrushing keeper. The third goal came in the 23rd minute when a fine move involving Jordan Hutchinson and James Stenning gave Tom Tollady the chance to fire home a rasping drive from 25 yards. Just after the half hour AFC were out of sight as the impressive Jack Stafford played a delightful through ball to James Stenning who beat the offside trap and made no mistake in finishing past the Colliers Wood keeper. The quality of the passing and finishing in this period was exceptional as AFC passed their rivals off the park. Good movement, excellent deliveries and sound finishing put the game beyond Colliers Wood in the first half.
Half Time 4 - 0
AFC took their foot off the pedal at half time but still managed another two goals in this period. The prolific Pete Rapson grabbed his 13th goal in nine games when his looped header from a Jack Stafford long throw found the net. Ollie Killick got the final goal as he went into double figures for the season. From a james Stenning cross Matt Harmsworth flicked on for Killick to fire home the sixth goal of the night. This was another excellent display of attacking football dismantling a side that had won 9 - 3 in the previous round. We now play the winners of Corinthian Casuals and Chertsey Town for a place in the semi-final.
