AFC WIMBLEDON LADIES RESERVES 4 COLORADO STORM 0
AFC's young reserve side started the first of their pre-season friendlies in positive fashion at Weston Green on Saturday when they defeated a talented touring American side Colorado Storm Youth 4-0.
Because of the heat manager Rick Hack and his American counterpart Karl Machamer agreed to play three 30-minute sessions and the opening exchanges saw some neat football played by both sides. It was AFC, however, who made the initial breakthrough when Lekesha James found the impressive Amy Price just inside the box and her left-footed shot evaded the diving goalkeeper.
The early stages of the second period saw Colorado enjoying the better of the exchanges but goalie Charlotte Nash was able to deal comfortably with the shots that came her way. AFC, however, soon settled and centre back Imy Hillyard, who was having an influential match, intercepted the ball in her own half and raced through the middle before an inch perfect pass saw debutant Sasha Denny beat the defence to the ball and send her shot inside the far post.
The final period saw AFC's superior fitness and organisation begin to have an effect. With Joanna Goodwin's poise and composure complimenting the tireless Price in midfield they were able to release speedy winger Rachel Woodland down the left to get behind the defence and deliver some dangerous crosses. With Colorado tiring the dangerous James was able to take advantage of an under-hit back pass to stab the ball home and then doubled her tally with a late strike after being put through by Denny.
With the back four of Hillyard, Sarah Pearce and Kylie and Danielle Davies looking solid manager Rick Hack can be satisfied with this first outing and pleased that the fitness work put into the pre-season training appears to be paying dividends.
