After last week’s postponement the Surrey Cup quarter final finally took place.
It was Epsom who started the brightest and a defensive error allowed them to take the lead after only 3 minutes. Wimbledon were level after 9 minutes when Terry Carlin burst through and finished one on one with the Epsom keeper. However, Epsom regained the lead from another defensive error when Jordan Knight was caught in possession and the Epsom striker found the back of the net. With time running out in the first half Reece Hannigan scored from a corner to take the sides in level at half time.
The team talk obviously worked at half time as it was a much more focused team that started the second half. Nevertheless it was Epsom that forced Jordan Knight into the first save of the half. The Dons finally took the lead themselves when Ebenezer Isiakpona got on the end of a George Martin flick. The lead was extended when Terry bagged his brace. George Martin then turned goal scorer when his shot beat the keeper and rolled agonisingly slowly over the line. A minute later Ebenezer scored his second of the game. George Oakley scored what was arguably the goal of the game when he took the ball round three Epsom players before hitting a powerful drive into the net. This was quickly followed by George Martin’s second when the Epsom keeper’s clearance dropped in front of him on the half way line and he lobbed the ball straight back into the net. George subsequently put in a cross for Tom Bingham to cheekily back heel across the line to bring up goal 9. Epsom scored a good goal in the final minute when their striker hit the ball across the Dons keeper into the bottom corner.
The saying “a game of two halves” was certainly apt for today’s game. This victory sees the Dons face Tooting & Mitcham in the semi final next month.
