AFC WIMBLEDON LADIES RESERVES 1 LAKOTA EAST 1
AFC Reserves second friendly of the season, against another touring side from America, proved to be much tougher than the first at Weston Green on Thursday evening.Lakers East, from Cincinnati Ohio, were a fit fast and technically sound team and AFC can be pleased to have matched them in every department and share the spoils in an exciting encounter.
Both sides started brightly and looked to catch the opposition on the break with the speedy American forwards looking dangerous out wide but AFC had the edge with centre forward Lekesha James's movement causing problems for the visitors, continuing her impressive form from the previous game.
It was Lakers East, however, who took the lead on 14 minutes. A break down the middle appeared to have been thwarted by a fine tackle on the edge of the box by captain Kylie Davies but the AFC defence were slow to react to the resultant loose ball and a right footed shot saw it fly into the bottom left hand corner of the net. This seemed to rattle AFC but the introduction of experienced Kelly Nethercoat to central midfield soon settled them and the half ended with AFC on top and pressing for the equaliser.
AFC got their deserved breakthrough within 2 minutes of the restart. Amy Price was pulled back 25 metres from goal and Davies rifled a trademark free kick into the top corner. The game opened up and AFC created some good chances. Sasha Denny and Francesca Chappell crossed superb balls from the left which saw firstly Michelle Storrier send a powerful shot just over the bar and then the excellent visitors goalkeeper block Roxanne Camp's close range effort.
Defender Toni Taylor, in her first game of the season, got stronger as the game wore on and put in some powerful challenges but it was AFC who finished on the back foot when a succession of corners saw some excellent defensive headers from Storrier and Rose Maskell. The final whistle bringing an end to what was a fine advertisement for the women's game.
