AFC Wimbledon cruised to victory in this very one sided game at Banstead Athletic last night.
Godalming Town sit bottom of the Ryman Youth League but attitude and application against these sort of teams is important and the final result proved the players were in the right frame of mind.
Tom Gibson replaced the injured Jack Turner in goal and in truth had very little to do but did it well keeping a clean sheet.
AFC dominated from the start and had three or four efforts before a clinical ball from Dan Coveley after 15 minutes released top scorer Pete Rapson, he calmly slotted past the onrushing keeper. Five minutes later Stenning played in Ollie Killick who finished his one on one with the keeper with the same aplomb as Rapson. After 25 minutes skipper Jack Stafford sliced open the Godalming Town defence with another fine ball leaving Rapson through on goal, he ran on and was tripped in the area by a defender who was suprisingly only shown the yellow card for a penalty to AFC. Billy Manning stepped up to the plate and fired his penalty into the bottom corner. AFC had further chances, Tom Tollady took on the defence and hit a post while Pete Rapson and Charlie Clark-Gleave also went close.
Half Time 3 - 0
AFC started the second half again looking for goals but credit must also go to the defenders, Jack Stafford, Jake Hill, Charlie Clark-Gleave and Daniel Coveley who kept their concentration in not allowing Godalming a sniff of a chance up front.
After 55 minutes young Charlie Hamsher replaced Ollie Killick and scored with his first touch. Billy Manning and Pete Rapson opened up the defence for Hamsher to finish from close range. Seven minutes later Pete Rapson notched his second with a good finish. On 64 minutes Pete Rapson fired in a sweet shot from just inside the area to complete a fine hat trick and excellent individual performance. More chances came and went as Rapson hit the bar and Stenning hooked over. A fine cross from subsitute Josh Ayres gave Hamsher a chance at the far post but his header went into the side netting. Josh Ayres who had come on at wide right produced a fine cameo performance consistently going past the left full back at will, his reward was a fine run that saw him tripped in the area, Ayres dusted himself down and fired home the penalty to complete the scoring.
This was a fine performance considering 10 of the under 18s squad played for the reserves on monday securing a semi final place in the Suburban Shield.
