Match report
An inexperienced reserve team, which included three debutantes in the squad, held on to defeat Chertsey by the odd goal of 3 in a match played on a difficult surface.
The Dons enjoyed much of the first half pressure with Fernandes having an early header cleared off the line, and shots from Huggins and Rob Hill being saved by the keeper. Although caught out by Chertsey's offside trap on several occasions the Dons continued to create chances and Yee and Huggins both missed good opportunities. After 28 minutes the Dons took the lead when Chertsey's keeper dropped a long free kick and Huggins rolled the ball into an empty net. Two minutes later Fernandes added a second when his drive from outside the box beat the keeper and defender on the line. Merry, who kept goal in the first half, had very little to do and Towse used his experience to organise the young back line.
The control exercised in the first half faded in the second and Martin was quickly required to scramble a shot for a corner. Ten minutes later poor defending gave Chertsey the chance to pull one back, and although the Dons had the chance to add to their score on the counter attack, most of the second half was spent dealing successfully with the Chertsey long game.
