After a reasonably slow start to the game AFC managed to pick up where they left off last season, and were unfortunate not to go 1-0 up after 10 minutes. Gareth Witter broke free of the Ashtead defence and slotted home, only for the ?referees assistant? to wave his flag furiously and inform the Referee of some sort of infringement, forcing him to disallow it!
AFC took a while to recover from this setback, and conceded a penalty shortly after, which Ashtead duly scored. This spurred us into action, and it was no surprise when AFC equalized later in the half ? Daniel Kyprianou picking the ball up just outside the area, and firing it with some venom into the bottom left hand corner of the goal, to send us in level at the break.
The second half was an even and well-fought contest, and the tireless running of Stephen Taylor and Jack George in midfield ensured that most attacks were broken up before they had started. Though on the rare occasions that Ashtead did break through they found Jamie Bundy and Harry West in great form to keep them at bay. It was therefore a bit of a shock when Ashtead took the lead some 10 minutes from the end. The ball broke down the right hand side, and the resulting cross rebounded into the goal via the centre forwards chest, after Dale had raced off his line to make the save.
All credit to AFC for digging in and not throwing in the towel at such a late stage in the game. Their constant hard work was rewarded a few minutes later, when Jack George found Raphael Grant unmarked in the area for him to stab the ball home to make it 2-2. Inspired by this AFC continued to press forward, and finally got what they deserved 4 minutes from time, when Gareth Witter broke free from his marker and unleashed a furious shot from the right hand side of the area, which flew into the top left hand corner of the goal, almost breaking the net in the process!
An excellent result against very good opposition, and full credit to the entire team for their attitude and commitment in gaining 3 well earned points.
