The League Cup Final was held at Molesey FC. The Dons started well and quickly began to create chances. First, George Oakley went close, then he followed this up with a lob that went over. Bradley Sexton nearly scored with a header from a corner. Nehemie Mole forced the Sandgate keeper into making a save. George Oakley put a telling cross in from the left but somehow Nehemie failed to connect with it, when literally any contact would have put the ball in the net. Tom Bingham hit a free kick that flew just over the top of the bar. Sandgate did mount one attack of their own and their striker went one on one with Jordan Knight in the Dons goal, but Jordan raced out and tackled the striker on the edge of the area. Nehemie had the last effort in the first half but his shot went wide.
In the second half it was more of the same from the Dons and the Sandgate goal seemed to be leading a charmed life. Luc Vezzu had a header well saved. Harry Bruce hit a bullet shot, which just went wide. Luc then had a shot which was parried by the keeper but George Oakley following up managed to hit the ball straight at the keeper. Sandgate were getting more rattled the longer the game went on and their challenges were getting more rash, leading to three of their players being booked.
Extra time couldn’t separate the two sides and so it went to the dreaded penalty shoot out. The Dons went first and Chris Vlietinck coolly put away the first penalty. Sandgate’s first penalty was well saved by Jordan. Tom Bingham stepped up to take the second and found the back of the net. Sandgate’s second penalty was saved by Jordan. Reece Hannigan scored the Dons third penalty. Sandgate then scored, although Jordan almost got a hand on the ball. Nehemie Mole scored the fourth penalty to win the cup for the Dons. The whole team celebrated in a large heap in the penalty area.
